The Legacy of Pretzels
Ditsch is one of the newest suppliers of Emma-Jane’s Foodservice and much like our company, it started from humble beginnings. We take much pride in our quality and chef made standards so onboarding the Ditsch products was a no brainer for us! In our supplier spotlight we wanted to relay the rich history that “Ditsch” shows, their awesome sustainability focus and of course their delicious pretzels.
The abundant history of Ditsch.
When Ditsch first approached us about importing their goods into New Zealand, we quickly looked into their history. Founded in 1919 by baker Wilhelm Ditsch in Germany, the company initially supported itself by supplying baked goods to local folk festivals on two Sundays each year. After World War II, with two of their bakeries destroyed, hope remained for the Ditsch family, and they rebuilt with a new bakery on Kapuzinerstrasse.
Wilhelm’s son, Heinz Ditsch, worked hard to carry on the family legacy. He began specializing in pretzels and salt sticks as long-life pastries, and thanks to his dedication, the business flourished. Heinz expanded the company further by launching a pretzel cart in Mainz, which led to growth in both staff and production space. This success also saw the creation of their first deep-freeze high bay warehouse in 1991.
Over time, Ditsch continued to grow, launching new innovations and opening more shops across Germany. By 1995, they celebrated the opening of their 100th Ditsch shop. Today, Ditsch is a global leader in the pretzel industry, boasting over 200 stores in Germany and exporting to countries around the world. With numerous awards to their name, they have truly proven their dominance in the world of pretzels.
Sustainability is just as important as ingredients.
Being in the hospitality industry we know how important good quality ingredients are to make a good dish/product. When consuming Ditsch’s product, you know that every pretzel is made with the utmost care, and quality ingredients. These include, high quality wheat flour, salt, and fresh yeast. All products are free from artificial preservatives, colours, and flavours which really aligns with our own values of creating advancements for the innovative chef.
Not only are Ditsch known for using high quality ingredients, they also pride themselves on their sustainability practices. In all stages of production they are keeping environmentally conscious. Examples of this include their responsible ingredient sourcing and efficient energy use in their bakeries.
